12.16  Arts Access winners

A photography course at an alternative school in Henderson, has been a life changer for the teenagers involved.

Their photographs and people's stories they gathered at the same time, were shown in an exhibition called Humans of Hendo and published in two books.

A few days ago, some of the class took their first plane ride to Wellington to receive an Arts Access Aotearoa Award at Parliament.

The Waitakere Alternative Education Consortium, Target Alternative Education Centre, and Auckland Creative Collaborative took out the Community Partnership Award 2018.

Lynn Freeman talked to Vanessa Green, one of the photography mentors, as well as three of Vanessa's top students - Denzyl, Shane and Sharon.  They talked about the project, the award and how photography has helped them to believe in themselves.

12.35  Cooking Sections - it's all about what we eat

Cooking Sections is a London based art duo fascinated by international food practices and systems, and they're about to explore our food producing nation on a research trip.

Their past  projects include The Plant That Could Cost You Your Home Ice-Cream and The 'Next "Invasive" Is "Native"' - not to mention an Italian installation that included packed lunches.

Artspace NZ is helping Daniel Fernández Pascual and Alon Schwabe see as much as possible of our food production and infrastructure over the next few weeks.

They're also wanting to talk to New Zealand communities, businesses and organisations.

Lynn Freeman talks to Cooking Section's Fernández and Alon, as well as Remco De Blaij the Artistic Director of Artspace.

12.49 A father and son opera production team update Don Giovanni

In the era of the Weinstein fallout, "Lover or predator" is the byline for Opera Otago's new modern-day production of Mozart's Don Giovanni, created by father and son director and music director John and Jonathan Drummond.

It's been several years in the making, largely because Jonathan has been establishing himself in the UK as a conductor, pianist and arranger.  He recently won an award in Leeds for his work as a music director.

His father John has directed more than 40 productions and worked with many of Dunedin's best young professional opera singers at the start of their careers.

Lynn Freeman spoke to John and Jonathan Drummond between rehearsals for Don Giovanni, now set in Dunedin in 2018:

This week Simon Morris reviews the documentary Whitney, the British comedy-drama Funny Cow, and a New Zealand film recently rewarded at the Moscow Film Festival - Stray.

1.32  Waiheke Island Artist In Residence Mark Surridge

The GPS routes recorded while he explored Waiheke Island on foot have found their way into the abstract paintings of Artist in Residence Mark Surridge.

Mark's a British artist invited to Waiheke by the Island's Community Art Gallery, and he's about to exhibit most of the 50 or so works he's created there since May.

Locals have already had the chance to look at Mark Surridge in action working on his often large-scale, brightly coloured paintings. 

Lynn Freeman asked Mark about using GPS in his art:   The Shape of the Walk opens at The Waiheke Art Gallery on August the 10th.

1.47  Shelly Berg - first call pianist and arranger

American jazz pianist and arranger Shelly Berg is one of the great go-to's for American singers - his lengthy CV includes working with Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Gloria Estefan, Bobby McFerrin, Chicago, KISS and Carole King.

Aside from pop and jazz, Shelly loves classical music too - he's heading to New Zealand to perform a concert ranging from Gershwin and Duke Ellington to Debussy.

Shelly Berg's piano of choice is Steinway and he's been nominated for several Grammy Awards as an arranger and co-producer.  Lynn Freeman asked just how he defines jazz in 2018:

2.04  Laugh Track - Ken Arkind and Carrie Rudzinski

On the 1st of September, the Going West Festival will offer New Zealand's leading authors, poets, playwrights and museums in a fortnight of fresh ideas, future-thinking - and the popular Poetry Slam. 

MC's of the Slam - Ken Arkind and Carrie Rudzinski - appear on today's Laugh Track.  Their picks include Whoopi Goldberg, John Mulaney, Trevor Noah, and last year's local winning team Dilworth Slam Team.

2.26  Corey Baker's choreography inspired by climate change

Kiwi choreographer Corey Baker wants Londoners to think about climate change as they recover from record summer temperatures.

He's recreating Antarctica at the London Science Museum, through images and through dance.  The installation opens from mid-August.

Corey is choreographing not to music, but to excerpts from Alison Ballance's Antarctic Podcast series created for RNZ:

Meanwhile another Baker dance-film based on climate change has just been shown on television in the UK.   Corey created it with dancer Maddie Graham in Antarctica a few months ago.

2.39  Nicholas Sheppard's novel about rugby and sexual identity

Wearing an All Black jersey is still the dream of many a Kiwi boy but in Nicholas Sheppard's new novel Broken Play, a talented young player's sexuality might derail his career.

These days homosexuality may not be illegal, but it's seldom discussed much in male-dominated sports like rugby.

In Broken Play, 23 year old Alec has the skills and determination to be a top All Black.  But he's conflicted because he feels he has to suppress - even deny - his sexuality.  Lynn Freeman talks to novelist Nicholas Sheppard about the place of sexuality in modern sport.

2.50  Australian composer Petra Salsjo leads by example

Australian composer, pianist, singer and songwriter Petra Salsjö wrote The Journey about her brush with breast cancer.

The Swedish-born musician composes for films, TV and art installations, and works across genres from classical and jazz, to pop and indie music.

Petra is coming to New Zealand to advise students here wanting to make a career in music, as part of Wintec's Spark Festival of Media Arts & Design in Hamilton.  

Lynn Freeman caught up with her before she left Melbourne and wonders whether you need to be multi-skilled musically to survive in a tough industry.
