In the next couple of months Cabinet is set to review the country’s refugee quota. The quota hasn’t been increased since 1987 when it was set at 800. The review comes during the worst refugee crisis seen since the end of the Second World War and growing calls for a substantial increase in the number of refugees resettled in New Zealand. Historian Ann Beaglehole - a refugee from Hungary - has written extensively on the Jewish refugee experience. Murdoch Stephens is the founder of the Doing Our Bit campaign which is calling for a doubling of the quota.

The race among the candidates for the Democratic and Republican US presidential nominations is heating up with the Iowa caucus due on February 1.  The Iowa vote is critical - candidates who win Iowa receive a major boost, but those who do poorly often kiss the race goodbye.
