This week’s whakatāuki explained by Rangi Kipa nō Te Atiawa

In Te Ahi Kaa this week, Te Atiawa artist Rangi Kipa will leave the shores of Aotearoa and head to an artist’s residency at the University of Hawaii in September.  As one of the country’s leading contemporary Māori artists he has a few pieces exhibited in Reo Karanga o Taranaki – Call of Taranaki that opened on August 16.  One of his signature work materials is corian and he explains the intricacy and difficulty of working with it.

Esteemed artist and curator of Reo Karanga o Taranaki – Call of Taranaki, Darcy Nicholas explains why most of the 25 artists that feature in the exhibition don’t actually live in the region.

Maggie Papakura (1873 - 1930) has continued to fascinate many eighty years after her death. Born Margaret Thom she became a guide at Whakarewarewa village, an enthnographer and scholar.  Te Ahi Kaa broadcasts part one of Remembering Makereti produced by Paul Diamond in 2003.
