After a long and bitter history with the Crown, Ngai Tuhoe have accepted an apology for the Crown's wrong-doings, brutal confiscation of their lands and loss of life. About two thousand people gathered in Taneatua to hear the formal apology from the Treaty Negotiations Minister, Chris Finlayson, as agreed under the 170 million dollar settlement signed last year. In his speech, Mr Finlayson, talked about the history between the Crown and Ngai Tuhoe - and said the Crown hopes to honestly confront the past and atone for the many injustices the iwi suffered.
