The Music Mix goes live!
In a celebration of spring and all things tuneful the Music Mix is being broadcast live for the first time. We'll have live performances from Ben King and Andrew Keoghan. They'll be playing brand new unreleased songs. Svelte will also be in the studio to perform a track never heard on the airwaves before. We also have new music from the Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Marty Duda raps with a perennial talent....
Mavis Staples has been singing gospel and soul music since the 1950s. Her career reached a low point a decade ago with the demise of The Staple Singers and the death of her father, Pops Staples. But lately things have been looking up for the 70-year-old Chicago resident. Ry Cooder produced her critically-acclaimed 2007 album We'll Never Turn Back, a record full of the soulful message songs The Staple Singers established their reputation with in the 1960s. But after a live release the following year, Mavis found herself wondering where to go next musically. Fortunately Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, also a Chicago resident, was on hand to produce her new album, You Are Not Alone. Marty Duda talks to the living legend.
Also in the show the first release from new Flying Nun signing The Unkown Mortal Orchestra. Listen here. If you like that here's a brand new Mara TK track Run (away from the valley of fear). You can download it for free here.....if you get in quick.
If you've been listening to the show you would've heard us mention this extraordinary video hand-made by the band Svelte. The laborious production saw each figure cut out again and again, frame by frame. It's all made of paper. There is no CGI. It's all miniature paper sets and paper figures. Amazing!
