Peter Björn and John

The first single from their new album Gimme Some features the cowbell pattern of the year so far. Consequently Nick Atkinson makes an urgent call to Stockholm to find how the trio came up with this infectious, donking poly-rhythm. Björn is at first effusive but confides in our reporter that the band often begin their song-writing process with a killer beat. He also offers a piece of advice: drummers must go easy. As Björn says "keep practicing on that all you drummers. Do not hit as hard as you do!"

Avalanche City

The unassuming man behind the current number one single in the country plays two songs live in Radio New Zealand's Auckland studios. Listen here! Not only does he bring his beloved acoustic guitar but Dave Baxter also has a vintage quarter-inch reel to reel recorder, upon which he has laid down some spooky and atmospheric arpeggios.
