Isabel Rivera Cuenca

Flamenco dancer Isabel Rivera Cuenca is touring the world performing and educating. Luckily she fell in with local composer and cellist Claire Cowan and the two have moved in together over summer. Cowan’s imagination has been fired by Cuenca’s passionate performances and the ink isn’t dry on a series of compositions inspired by the traditional Spanish dance form. Nick Atkinson caught a performance in Auckland and then spoke with Isabel and Claire.

Liam Finn live session

Before he headed up to Wainuiomata for the final Camp A Low Hum, Liam Finn dropped into the Music 101 studios to perform a couple of new songs from his latest album The Nihilist, with his long-time collaborator EJ Barnes.

Charles Bradley

After years of on again off again parenting from his mother, he left home at 14, sleeping on the subways of New York, and eventually earning a living as a cook and James Brown impersonator under the name Black Velvet, James Brown Jnr. It wasn’t until he was 62, that he ditched the toupee and started performing and recording songs under his own name, after ongoing encouragement from Thomas Brenneck, the guitarist for Sharon Jones and the Dap-kings, Antibalas and The Mennahan Street Band. Emma Smith got him on the phone ahead of his trip down under.
