The Czech criminal residing in a New Zealand prison could soon be winging his way home to the Czech Republic thanks to an extradition order. Andrew Geddis of the University of Otago hopes the Sroubek case will be used to shine a light on the workings of Immigration New Zealand. The picturesque surfing village of Raglan attracts lots of tourists who rent lots of baches and Airbnbs. Trouble is locals struggle to find a home to rent despite a third of residential properties sitting empty. Fiona McNabb of the Whaingaroa Raglan Affordable Housing Project says locals are often booted out of their rental homes in time for the Christmas rush and the big bucks from holiday makers. The government is looking at filling the gap between KiwiBuild and renting. It's "KiwiBuy". The upshot is the government buys houses in partnership with low income earners.Buying under a shared ownership scheme usually involves the buyer paying rent as well, lower than market rate.The body putting up the money continues to own the proportion of the property not covered by the mortgage and the borrower's deposit.
