Gallery: Frances Hodgkins - her life and work

Painter Frances Hodgkins spent over 40 years of her life in England and Europe. From the age at 32 to her death at 70, she moved frequently from one country to another, and from one studio to another. Movement seemed necessary for her work and at times resulted in considerable hardship.

Although she was much older than the revolutionary generation of artists at work in England in the 1930s, Frances Hodgkins found that they understood her work. They accepted her as one of themselves, and asked her to join them

Extracts from a documentary made in 1969, consist of recording of her surviving friends and fellow artists, including Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Hear them remember her with extraordinary vividness and affection.
