Te Kainga Hostel, a Home Away from Home - Christchurch was a centre for Maori Trade Training schemes in the early 1960s, and a number of the boys taken from their rural homes and introduced to city life, and to city work, lived at the Kainga Hostel in Hansens Lane.  The hostel opened for Maori trade trainees in 1962 and closed in 1992.
