Elective surgery put on hold over winter bugs

3:30 pm on 19 August 2015

Auckland City Hospital is postponing elective procedures today, as it struggles with the influx of people suffering winter illnesses.

It said the emergency department had high numbers of people seeking treatment with many needing to be admitted.

While some of the illness was flu-related, some were elderly patients with long-term conditions exacerbated by winter conditions.

The hospital said it had now reached the upper limits of its bed capacity.
