Future of South Island newspaper still uncertain

The future of one of the country's oldest newspapers, the Oamaru Mail, is uncertain following a meeting today.

Allied Press staff have confirmed the newly appointed Otago Daily Times editor-in-chief, Barry Stewart, visited the newspaper's office today.

However, no one from the Oamaru Mail or Allied Press would speak with Radio New Zealand this afternoon.

When Allied Press bought the paper last month, its managing director, Sir Julian Smith, described it as a valuable addition to the company's current stable of newspapers, websites and television stations.

He said all Oamaru Mail staff would transfer to Allied Press, but it was not clear if that was still the case.

Founded in 1876, the paper is published five days a week.
