Quarantined maize spilt on public road

2:46 pm on 26 August 2015

The chief executive of Port Taranaki says a spill of quarantined maize on roads near the port has been cleaned up and does not represent a biosecurity hazard.

Guy Roper says the imported maize was being unloaded from a bulk carrier overnight and transported to a quarantine area on port land when a small amount was spilt.

He says the spilt maize was cleaned up by 8am and the Ministry for Primary Industries had assured him it did not represent a biosecurity risk.

The director of resource management at the Taranaki Regional Council, Fred McLay, says it had not been notified of the spill but would not expect to be unless there were potential environmental effects.
