Research into topics including insecticides, children's health, methane emissions and surf breaks have won funding in the government's Science Investment Round.

Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce said 48 programmes had been selected and would receive $96.5 million over four years.

The successful projects include preventing family violence, developing self-cleaning coatings for door handles and railings in hospitals, and classifying and managing important surf breaks.
