Health insurer Southern Health has made an annual profit of $5.8 million in the year to June, a turnaround from the previous year's $390,000 loss.

The not-for-profit organisation said premium income rose 6 percent to $818m, due to price hikes.

Claims rose 6 percent to $738m, which the company said was due to higher number of claims, the increasing costs of procedures, and an ageing population.

For every dollar members paid in premiums, Southern Cross paid out 90 cents in claims.
