The former mayor of Wellington, Sir James Belich, has died at the age of 88.
Sir James studied engineering and later ran a successful advertising agency.
Sir James was mayor of Wellington from 1986 to 1992.
He won the mayoralty as part of a campaign to halt the discharge of raw sewage into Cook Strait, and as a result, a treatment plant was installed near the airport.
