Govt welcomes Sri Lankan commission

7:19 pm on 16 September 2015

The Government is lauding moves by the Sri Lankan Government to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to help the country recover from decades of civil war.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera made the announcement at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva this week.

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says setting up a commission is a significant step towards genuine reconciliation and political devolution for Sri Lankans.

The UN Human Rights Council overnight releases the findings of its investigation into war crimes, especially towards the end of Sri Lanka's civil war in 2009, when thousands of people were killed.
