The government is investing $1.5 million over the next three years to promote a new air service between Christchurch and China.

Last month, Christchurch Airport announced China Southern Airlines will begin flying direct from Guangzhou to the city from December.

The investment is on top of $270,000 approved last year to help fund three charter flights from China to the Canterbury region.

Prime Minister John Key said 60,000 Chinese tourists visited Christchurch last year, spending $43 million.
