A severe weather warning is still in place for a swathe of the Lower North Island and part of the top of the South Island.
Forecasters expect up 140 millimetres of rain in the Tararua District, Wairarapa and Tararua Ranges for 27 hours - from 9pm today.
The same warning applies to Marlborough and Kaikoura.
It earlier brought more than 24 hours of rain to the Gisborne area, closing roads and flooding some homes.
