A driver has been punched in the head in a road rage attack at the top of the South Island.

It happened on Gardner Valley Road near Motueka this afternoon.

The victim was driving a ute when he overtook a maroon coloured Suzuki Vitara, which was travelling slowly.

The driver of the Suzuki then overtook the ute. Both vehicles pulled off the highway and the attacker hit the ute driver in the head several times, before stealing his keys and driving off.

Local police describe the offender as a tall, solidly-buit Maori man, possibly wearing grey track pants and a Chiefs training jersey.
