4,000 customers are currently without power in the Banks Peninsula and Christchurch areas.
Nearly 16,000 customers were affected by the power cut earlier today, including many in Akaroa, which is holding its biannual French Festival to celebrate 175 years since its settlement.
Power has since been restored in Akaroa but areas such as Lincoln, Burnham and Darfield are not expected to get it back until after 1pm.
