A Bill seeking to make sure caregivers are paid for the time and cost of travelling between clients has passed its first reading.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said the legislation recognised the valuable work of people who provided care and support to elderly and disabled New Zealanders living in their own homes.

The Bill has been referred to the Health Committee for consideration.
