Maori closer to equalling median income

Maori are moving closer to equalling the median income for all New Zealanders, the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment says.

In its annual report, the ministry says the aim is to achieve that by 2040; in the last year, the median weekly income for Maori was $525, compared with a national median of $600.

But at 87.5 percent, the figure is an improvement on 84.5 percent the preceding year.

The ministry says levels of Maori employment have returned to what they were before the Global Financial Crisis.
