Record low turnout for energy trust election

The election for an Auckland energy trust has drawn what's believed to be the lowest turnout for a publicly elected body in this country.

Fewer than 13-percent of almost 300,000 eligible electors took part in the vote for the Auckland Energy Consumer Trust, which is the majority owner of the lines company Vector.

The candidates included the former cabinet ministers Judith Tizard and Paul East.

Returning officer Dale Ofsoske says it continues a trend of falling turnouts, including that for the Auckland Council in 2013.
