A man is dead after his car hit a bollard along the banks of the Hutt River, north of Wellington, earlier today.

It is understood the 23-year-old was driving down a gravel road on the eastern side of the river when his car crashed into the wooden bollard just after 11am.

Emergency services were called but the man died at the scene.

Acting Sergeant Clint Rogers said it appeared the man had been drinking with friends further up the river and was not wearing a seatbelt.

He said there were no witnesses to the crash, and the police were trying to piece together what had happened.
