Packaging workers take action after pay rise rejected

Packaging workers in Porirua are taking industrial action, after their pay rise request was rejected.

Eighty five E tu members at Sealed Air Packaging were going on an overtime and data entry ban for the next two weeks, saying the company paid them well below the market rate.

The Porirua plant makes packaging products for the lamb and meat industry.

Union organiser Mark James said they're paid nearly $6 an hour less than comparable workers around the country.

"Other employers in the same region are paying their staff a lot more... it's the same work, it's not fair."

The workers were being treated like second-class citizens compared to people working for the company in Australia, Mr James said.
