Council pours cold water on Avon oil

3:04 pm on 3 November 2015

The Canterbury Regional Council is urging whitebaiters to stop pouring cooking oil into the Avon River.

The council says the technique reduces ripples in the water, which makes it easier for whitebaiters to see their catch.

Council monitoring and compliance regional manager Marty Mortiaux says the Avon River is already dirty, so adding more pollution is despicable and takes the gloss off all the work the community is doing to improve the river's health.
