Security guard wage rise to be challenged in court

The Wellington City Council's decision to extend the living wage to its security guards will be challenged in court.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce says it will apply for a judicial review of the council's decision to pay its contracted staff $19.25 per hour in the High Court.

Chamber chief executive John Milford says the council voted for the policy despite receiving advice from its own lawyers that it was acting beyond its powers.

He says the council's decison was not prudent or efficient.
