Major archaeological discovery in South Taranaki

A significant archaeological discovery has been made at the site of the project to realign the notorious Normanby overbridge in South Taranaki.

The Transport Agency is not saying what it is, but says it is consulting with iwi and Heritage New Zealand about what to do next.

In the meantime, work on the State Highway 3 project is continuing at what the agency says is an appropriate distance from the discovery site.

It says archaeological discoveries are not uncommon in major roading projects, particularly in areas with a rich cultural heritage like Taranaki, and it has strict protocols for managing them sensitively.
