Bar fined for Smokefree breach

A second Wellington bar has been fined for breaching the Smokefree Environments Act.

A lawyer for The George on Willis entered a guilty plea in the District Court and the company was fined $1080 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of $300.

In November 2013, regional public health received a complaint about the George's smoking area and the charge was laid after no changes had been made a year later.

Earlier this month, another Wellington bar and cafe, Enigma, was prosecuted under the same legislation and fined $1850 for putting a roof on its outdoor smoking area.

A third Wellington bar, Public, is to go to a defended hearing early next year on a similar charge.
