The driver of a car involved in a head-on crash north of Whangarei has died at the scene.
Two cars collided on State Highway 1 at Hukerenui just before 1pm, and both drivers were trapped in their vehicles.
The police say the driver and sole occupant of the northbound car is dead, and a woman from the southbound vehicle has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A man in the same vehicle was unhurt.
Detours are in place around the crash scene, using Hukerenui Road at the northern end and Jordan Valley Road at Hikurangi to the south.
The police say State Highway 1 is likely to remain closed for another two to three hours while the accident is investigated.
