11:31 am on 27 November 2015

Police say the search for a missing teenage swimmer off Raglan is switching to a recovery operation.

The 17-year-old boy was reported to be in distress at the beach yesterday afternoon.

An extensive search, including the Coastguard and a rescue helicopter, was conducted last night until it became too dark.

The search resumed at 4.30am this morning but search teams have not been able to find the boy.

Sergeant Phil Bell said the searchers had returned to base to discuss their next steps with the teenager's family members, who were continuing their own search today.
