Councillor slams colleagues over secrecy

A Nelson councillor has criticised the mayor and a colleague over what he says is secrecy around their involvement in an investigation into a controversial roading project in the city.

Matt Lawrey said it wasn't known that mayor Rachel Reese and transport committee chair Eric Davy were part of a focus group set up by the government's roading authority to help develop a strategic case for the Southern Link investigation.

The Transport Agency confirmed last week the investigation would move to the next stage, based on the findings of the strategic case.

Mr Lawrey, who is an outspoken opponent of the Southern Link, said the lack of transparency undermines the current process and was a double standard when the mayor made calls earlier for openness on the issue.
