A toxic algae that is deadly to dogs and could be harmful to people has bloomed in some rivers around the Tasman district.
The council monitored the potential for the algae bloom in summer, and it had appeared in rivers on the Waimea Plains, including the lower Wai-iti River and the Waimea River, the council's environmental information manager Rob Smith said.
It had also been found in the Takaka River, Mr Smith said.
The algae was known to be deadly to dogs and posed a potential health risk to humans, and the water should not be entered where the dark, mat-like algae was visible, he said.
