E-data project gets funding boost

A pilot project looking at how electronic sensors could be used to monitor everything from air and water quality to public safety has had a funding boost.

The Christchurch City Council has agreed to contribute $330,000 towards the project, which will place in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and also involved funding from the government and technology company NEC.

It will look at how each of the cities could benefit from installing sensors to gather data on things such as pollution levels, traffic flows and public disturbances.

The project envisages the data being made publicly available, so developers were able to produce applications for peoples' smart phones, to keep them better informed.
