The Ports of Auckland says several people needed medical treatment after embers from a public fireworks display rained down on them last night.

The Port company paid for the display at Captain Cook Wharf last night, as part of long weekend activities.

Spokesperson Matt Ball said when the problem arose they cut the fireworks short - from 10 minutes to eight minutes.

He said about four people suffered very minor burns from the embers.
