Christchurch to mark 5th anniversary of earthquake

1:00 pm on 9 February 2016

A civic memorial service will be held in Christchurch to mark the fifth anniversary of the February 2011 earthquake.

Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae and Lady Janine Mateparae will attend the service on 22 February, which will be held in the Botanic Gardens.

Christchurch's mayor, Lianne Dalziel, says the anniversary is an important event for the community to reflect on what happened on the day of the earthquake and to look at how far the city has come.

Families of those who died and people whose lives were changed by serious injury will attend the event as well as representatives of the emergency services.

Some families are travelling from overseas to be in Christchurch for the anniversary.
