A 52-year-old man fatally struck by a train while cycling in Christchurch this morning was a member of the city's symphony orchestra.
Richard Chandler died after colliding with the train shortly after 8am at the crossing on Fendalton Avenue.
The police say the barrier arms and signals were working at the time.
Mr Chandler was associate principal bassoon player in the orchestra, having first played with it in 1983.
