New Christchurch social housing units opened

10:19 am on 16 February 2016

Christchurch City Council is opening 18 new social housing units today in what it is describing as its largest development since the 2011 earthquake.

One-fifth of the council's housing stock was badly damaged in the quakes, contributing to a shortage of affordable homes in the city.

The council has signed an accord with the government to build more affordable homes and estimates another 700 are needed.

The houses being opened today are in Addington and include a mix of one- and two-bedroom units.
