The rural fire service has contained yesterday's fire near Pines Beach, north of Christchurch.
The fire, which began at 2.30am, ended up covering nearly six hectares of forest.
Waimakariri Rural Fire Authority principal fire officer Tim Sheppard said it was not out, but had not spread any further and was safer than it was yesterday.
He said three crews would be working on the fire through until Sunday, which is believed to be suspicious.
