A learner driver was clocked going double the speed limit in Hamilton last night.

The driver was pulled over in a car that was not his after driving 127 kilometres-an-hour in a 60 kilometre speed zone in wet conditions.

Police said the driver had a passenger with him, and that the young man has been kept in the cells until tomorrow.

The police officer attending the scene on Middle Road posted on the Waikato Roading Police Facebook page that the road was blocked with cars and people and he was surrounded by a mob who threatened him and threw things at the patrol car.

Learner drivers are required to always be accompanied by a supervisor.
