Distressed bull shot dead next to Auckland motorway

A distressed bull has been shot dead in Auckland because of fears it could get on to the southern motorway in peak hour traffic..

A local farmer called the police just after midday, saying the animal had escaped from a trailer on the motorway near Takanini.

Police said it was not found at the time, despite considerable resources being deployed.

When it was seen about 3pm, it ran from from specialist animal and vet staff.

Police said it was shot as a last resort.
