An 18-month-old boy remains in a critical but stable condition in Starship Hospital after being rescued from the waters of the Hauraki Gulf on Friday night.

He was flown to Starship Hospital after emergency services were called to Rangiahua Island, off the west coast of Great Barrier Island.

The hospital said a three-year-old girl involved in the same incident had been discharged.
