Cell coverage returns after towers burnt

Vodafone cellphone services in Lower Hutt should be almost back to normal following a quarry fire last week.

A fire at several portacoms at the quarry on Haywards Hill Road last Thursday damaged a cellphone tower nearby.

That tower was linked to another near Kaitoke, which also went down.

A Vodafone spokesperson said two cell sites on wheels had been put in place for temporary connections.

One of the sites was only 2G but engineers were working to establish 3G and 4G networks as well.

Work was also continuing on permanent repairs.
