Apartment residents evacuated after fire breaks out in cafe

8:32 am on 9 April 2016

Residents of an Auckland apartment block were evacuated this morning because of a fire in a ground-floor cafe.

The Fire Service said the alarms alerted those who live in the four-storey block in Browns Bay and most were out by the time fire crews arrived just after 3.30am.

One elderly man was too unwell to be moved but was in no immediate danger so fire fighters stayed with him.

Assistant area commander John Booth said the fire was extinguished.

Work was now almost complete and people were returning to their homes.
