10:49 am on 18 April 2016

A string of four burglaries in Canterbury last night ended with a stolen car being crashed into a KFC.

The police said the first call came in about 11.30pm, when there was a break-in at Redmonds Homeware Store in Ashburton.

Later, in the early hours this morning, an offender also tried to gain access to locked cabinets at the Temuka New World.

About 45 minutes later, there was a break-in at Robbie's Bar and Restaurant in Ashburton and a vehicle was taken.

Police said they received reports soon after of an alarm activation at Tinwald Supervalue, where numerous items were stolen.

The stolen vehicle, located nearby, was driven off and crashed into Ashburton KFC shortly after.

The driver was arrested, while two other people fled on foot.

Police were still investigating whether the burglaries were connected.
