Funding earmarked to help deal with freedom campers

There will be money in next month's Budget to help councils plagued by freedom campers, the government says.

Several councils have complained about their lack of powers to take on campers who park on the side of a road and leave rubbish or waste.

Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism John Key told TV3's The Nation there would be money in the Budget to help councils build more infrastructure, aimed at helping campers and backpackers.

Mr Key said the government was also encouraging more investment in hotels, but that wouldn't be an area it would put money into.
