IS 'booby-trapping' suburbs during retreat from Iraqi strongholds

Islamic State fighters are laying explosives across Iraq on an industrial scale, according to the head of Australia's joint training mission with New Zealand in that country.

Colonel Gavin Keating said IS was booby-trapping entire suburbs as it prepared to retreat from various strongholds. He said the scale of the operation was similar to that of previous conflicts.

"They're creating them on an industrial scale - so they're using them for tactical obstacles to prevent movement over wide areas, and then inside urban areas under their control they're using them to essentially booby-trap."
