Reckitt Benckiser, the maker of Nurofen in Australia has been fined $A1.7m ($NZ 1.86m) for breaching consumer laws.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission had asked the Federal Court to impose a fine of $6 million.

Last year the court found the range of so-called "pain-specific" Nurofen products all contained the same active ingredient and did the same thing.

Reckitt Benckiser promised to relieve either back pain, period pain, tension headache or migraine, depending on the product, even though it was not possible to target pain relief in such a manner.
