A Christchurch city councillor wants the New Brighton pier kept open while earthquake repairs are carried out.
The pillars holding up the 300 metre long pier will take up to 18 months to fix, with the project due to start in spring.
But councillor David East says local businesses need the pier to stay open for at least some of that time.
He would like it to at least be opened up to the public at weekends.
